For instance, it is well known that a person cannot be hypnotized against his will. As the hypnotic condition is usually induced by the suggestion of the operator, his failure is due to the contrary auto-suggestion of the subject. Again, if the subject submits to be hypnotized, but resolves beforehand that he will not submit to certain anticipated experiments, the experiments are sure to fail.

…therefore, in reality, he has been hypnotized, although he is unaffected by the suggestion because he has repressed and dissociated that which was put into his brain. The object onto whom he has projected the hypnotic state, is now unknowingly susceptible to the hypnotic suggestion and unless he is educated regarding this possibility, he will likely become a victim of the projection. This is explained in The Magic of Believing but in reverse to what one does when he or she resists internalizing a command. In the Magic of Believing it is hoped one will internalize suggestions and project them from the self for the benefit of the object of the projection.
