Part of my problem?

Sadistic, he-man campaigns were winning industry praise; for example, Advertising Age hailed the infamous Silva Thin cigarette theme, “How to Get a Woman’s Attention: Ignore Her,” as “brilliant.” Even in medical journals, ads for tranquilizers showed depressed housewives standing next to piles of dirty dishes and promised to get them back to work.

Sociopathic Personality Disorder on wiseGEEK:

  • The most common antisocial personality disorder treatment is psychotherapy, which is best done by psychologists specializing in this condition as well as sociopathic personality disorder; treating antisocial personality disorder can be emotionally damaging to therapists who don't specialize in it.
  • Antisocial personality disorder is a mental health condition in which an individual seems to feel no need to conform to accepted standards of social behavior, and as a consequence may frequently violate the law and have difficulty maintaining healthy relationships and keeping a job. Among the most common symptoms of antisocial personality disorder are an apparent indifference to ideas of right and wrong, aggressiveness, deceitfulness, manipulativeness, impulsivity, and a seeming lack of awareness of other people’s rights.

Screen Flicker

  • The technology used in a CRT monitors causes the screen to flicker no matter what setting, according to PC Review UK. But increasing the refresh rate on a CRT reduces eyestrain. If you want to reduce the effects of flicker, set your CRT to refresh at at least 72 hertz--but higher rates are better and 85 hertz provides an optimal screen to reduce flicker.

Right Mr. Sanes and TV viewers and media itself should take heed to this potential…

Post-apocalyptic fiction conveys this message, in part, by showing us the dark side of technology, (which is really our own dark side) -- as a weapon and a tool of manipulation, and as something that can run amok because of unintended consequences. It shows us what happens when technology is paired with corrupt societies and our own failings as people, by depicting a future that has been destroyed by overpopulation, war, crime or ecological disaster; or by showing us a future humanity that is infantilized by automation, lost in decadence, or controlled and persecuted by human and technological villains.
