Helen Elizabeth Cox Godfrey
Mrs. Helen Elizabeth Cox Godfrey, age 86, a resident of 810 River Road, Washington, died Wednesday, February 1, 2012, at her home. Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM Saturday, February 4, 2012 at the First Baptist Church in Washington, conducted by Dr. Jimmy Moore. Burial will follow in Oakdale Cemetery. The following will serve as pallbearers: Devon Mish, Terry Cook, Larry Loving, Tommy Cox, Stanley Edwards, and Glenn Hardison. Mrs. Godfrey was born in Beaufort County on January 1, 1926. She was the daughter of the late Jesse Fitzhugh Cox and Thelma Mish Cox. Mrs. Godfrey was a retired bookkeeper with the Beaufort County Tax Collectors office. As a member of the First Baptist Church, Mrs. Godfrey was a member of the Ruth Sunday School Class, WMU Group #4, the Young at Heart Club, past Girls Auxiliary teacher and a former Circle member. She was a Charter member of the Red Hat Honey’s and participated in activities at the Grace Harwell Senior Center. On March 29, 1946, she married Otis A. Godfrey, who survives. Surviving with her husband are two daughters, Carole Godfrey Hill of Roper, Kay Godfrey Woolard and husband, Jeffrey of Washington; two grandchildren, Tiffany Cook Coltrain and husband, Greg, Ryan Godfrey Quidley; two step grandchildren, Kathy Hardison and husband, Glenn, Robin Terry; three great grandchildren, Jewel, Mollie, and Mallorie Cook and six step great grandchildren, Kalyn, Hagen, Lily, Mara, Austin and Kaylyn. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Godfrey was preceded in death by a sister, Kathryn Cox; a brother, Jesse Thomas “T.J.” Cox and son-in-law, Bobby Hill. The family will receive friends from 6:30 PM to 8:00 PM Friday, February 3, 2012, at First Baptist Church, 113 N. Harvey Street, Washington and other times at the home, 810 River Road, Washington.
