Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Harris Gibbs, age 95, a resident of 403 East 8th Street, Washington, died Monday, May 25, 2009 at her home. A graveside service will be held 3:00 pm Thursday, May 28, 2009 at Oakdale Cemetery, Washington, conducted by Dr. Jimmy Moore. The family will receive friends at the home from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm Thursday. Mrs. Gibbs was born in Halifax County on June 2, 1913. She was the daughter of the late John Marvin and Hetty Knox Harris. Mrs. Gibbs graduated from Townsville High School in Vance County and East Carolina College, where she earned a Master’s Degree in elementary education. She taught school in North Carolina for 34 years—six years in the Vance, Craven, Wilson and Pitt County Schools—and 28 years in the Beaufort County Schools, retiring in 1975. Mrs. Gibbs was a lifelong member of the First Baptist Church in Washington where she was a member of church group #4. She served for 15 years on the Brown Library Board of Trustees. Mrs. Gibbs served two terms as President of the Friends of Brown Library. She was a member and past president of the Washington Woman’s Club. Mrs. Gibbs was also a member of the Alpha Omega Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma and the E.C.U. Alumni Association. On September 20, 1936, she married Hallet A. Gibbs, who preceded her death, February 1, 1998. Mrs. Gibbs is survived by her son, Hal Gibbs and his wife, Ruth of Greenville; grandson, Benjamin Gibbs and his wife, Dawn of Winterville; step-grandson, Sgt. First Class Anthony L. Mann and his wife, Bridget Conway Mann of Coraopolis, PA; two great-grandsons, Landon Augustus Gibbs and Kyle Joseph Mann; and two great-granddaughters, McKenzie Elizabeth Gibbs and Saorise Marie Mann. In addition to her parents and her husband, Mrs. Gibbs was preceded in death by a sister in law, Pauline Gibbs Mason. Mrs. Gibbs family would like to thank her special friends, Joyce Gay and Frankie and Viva Watson, for being with her at the end. Paul Funeral Home of Washington is serving the Gibbs family.
