Such a “cue” or “trigger” effect can explain the onset of neurotic symptoms…updated

…as well as more benign symptoms when a sight, smell or sound triggers the recall of a circumstance in the past, page 36, Man and His Symbols.

The image below is from Man and His Symbols, page 41.  I haven’t picked up this book in 5 years at least.

An acquaintance who I have known since 1996 purchased the painting at the top of this page for his home around 2003.  I read this book in 1988.  I did not recognize it as coming from Man and His Symbols but it was familiar to me, I knew I had seen it before.  Entanglements prevented me from any immediate recognition.
