Backmasking - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
…and in the case of the backmasking used in The Exorcist, it was associated with evil possession. The same thing occurred when I heard a piece of music after hearing it in the film Copycat in which a serial killer is murdering people. After finding and listening to the music I started to think there was something evil about it.
This is no way infers there isn’t something evil about some pieces of music. A friend and I were discussing this in relationship to Shostakovich’s Gadfly. I suggested it was the associations that caused people to think of his music as revolutionary, however there are pieces of music associated with evil or the dance of the devil, in which the music itself sounds sinister such as that used in Phantom of the Opera and Carnival of Souls. Heard aside from their associations I would surmise most people would find those pieces to be unpleasant. This alludes to a pleasant rhythm to happiness and positive mental attitude in the brain. I thought the piece of music titled Shadow Dancer to be very sad and I had never heard it before and had nothing to associate with it. I think many interpretations of some music as evil or sad are due to its presence in the mind and could be some other piece of music which sounds similar, for instance, Color My World by Chicago, is similar to Moonlight Sonata by Beethoven. Someone might have unpleasant thoughts associated with Moonlight Sonata and on hearing Color My World, which connotes a positive feeling towards another. might express the sad feelings present in the mind. Pieces of music like Black Delilah connote the lack of harmony or a surreal landscape in the mind like Dali’s many paintings.
