At therapeutic doses, phenytoin may produce horizontal gaze nystagmus. At toxic doses, patients experience sedation, cerebellar ataxia, and ophthalmoparesis, as well as seizures. Idiosyncratic side-effects of phenytoin, as with other anticonvulsants, include rash and severe allergic reactions.
